I got to see the UP 844 that day, as I was headed to Lincoln. Originally I was going to intercept east of Central City, let them do the servicing stop there, then leap frog ahead. I'd be satisfied with two good spots and then I would continue east. But I got to Grand Island, liked the scene there, and waited for it. Then continued east. No stress.
I'd be very surprised if UP hadn't contacted the local departments and county sheriffs. Usually there is a special agent tagging along on the highway and he can contact the locals if he needs help. I believe the train was running a little behind their published schedule that morning. If I remember correctly during the 1984 trips to the World's Fair, the SP4449 people would let a CHP officier ride in their combine and radio his fellow officers when he saw something that needed attention.
Another piece of information. In the recent years, UP844 didn't go track speed. Maybe 45-50 mph. Since the rebuild last year they have been running faster. That may have surprised some folks..
BTW, if you plan to chase the Frontier DaysTrain, be aware that there is major road construction on US 85.
