With things to do in the area, view it as a regional trip.
Go over to Taos if you have time. The ride is an easy day trip. It's a scenic drive. On the way over, the Rio Grande gorge is a must for view, photo. There's also the earthship tour. In Taos, there's plenty for kids to see and do.
Another is a trip over to Pagosa Springs, CO. The hot springs are right on the San Juan River in downtown. I don't know of any kids or adults who wouldn't like an afternoon in the pools there. Afterwards a trip up to Wolf Creek Pass is something I would think any kid would really like. Pagosa has a good selection of restaurants too.
Or depending on your vehicle, there's plenty right up the road from Chama. Take a trip back behind Cumbres to Trujillo meadows lake. There's hiking, fishing or superb photo potential in the area. A car can reach this area however it's a dirt road.
