Our Passenger trains had names for the public and numbers for us, rarely did I hear loco crew or train controllers calling same by the name, with the exception of the Silver Fern daylight railcar and then it was shortened to the "Fern".

If there were named trains then those names would be published in Passenger Timetables not Employee Timetables, if the trains were numbered then they were known to operating men by numbers as found in the links I posted above which were from the Employee Timetable.
