Fencing wire that ends stapled to a post on my property would
look about the same if cut to remove.

Modern steel banding for pallets or crates I think is relatively
new so use of wire for this as suggested by Mr. Holmes is
quite possible. I do recall wood crates with wire binding but
don't remember how the loose wire ends were connected.
