Hi,
I learned civil engineering at Ga Tech from 1973-1980 (also learned electrical engineering at same time).
The HP 35 (first pocket calculator - $395) was offered in the summer of 1973. I learned using paper and pencil (summer job in 1973) and then slide rule and punch cards and patch panels until I got my first pocket calculator c1975 (HP 45 $395).
Unless it is trigonometry or above, I seem to reach for pencil and paper as often as my HP calculator. Especially when geometry is needed.
