You have to accept that Farmington is an oilfield town. The economy rises and falls with the price of natural gas which is the bulk of what they produce. Because of what's left of big oil as in the Seven Sisters, the surviving Three Ugly Step Sisters demand and get things like decent communication. They support the community because they have to have people that live there to work there.

If the price of gas or oil goes up a lot the community changes. Housing goes thru the roof. The community develops a lot of rough edges real fast. Farmington is a center of commerce yet lacking things that you can find in Denver, Albuquerque. and other huge cities. It is also just outside of an Indian Reservation which has it's own set of issues that politics can't seem to deal with.

I almost wound up living there in 1980 in the middle of a huge oil boom. It was a lot more promising than Rock Springs, Wyoming. I wound up getting sent to Fort Worth, Texas instead. Kicking and screaming I might add. None the less Farmington is a lot better place than Rankin or Perryton, Texas.
