We've ALL lost a hero. I am proud to have had Carl as a friend and will always fondly remember the time that I spent with him. A great gentle soul.
He would sometimes show up at Cumbres when I'd be working west with Jim Shawcroft. We'd all sit on the section house porch and visit. Once he got in to a discussion with Jim as to who was over to Chama last when working for the D&RGW. Jim boasted he was on the last freight in August of 1968. Carl countered with "well,
I was the deadhead move running 483 when 473 came back to Durango December, 1968"....... "OK, Carl, ya got me there..."
Here is Carl climbing down out of 473's cab after his last trip to Silverton in Oct., 1980.
He wasn't quite done with the Narrow Gauge though. The next day he ran the D&RGW's last narrow gauge train, when he ran this short work train up into the canyon above Rockwood. Here Carl and 473 are starting up the hill out of Hermosa..
Rest In Peace, Carl Jack. We will all miss you.
