Most of the time the Chili Line engine ran light to Alamosa and a different one returned the next day. It depended on the dispatcher.
I don't know about the hostler situation in Antonito. There should have been one in Santa Fe as well.
As far as the crews Henry Willis lived in Santa Fe. I believe the others lived in Alamosa. That means they didn't spend much time at home. Arnell died within a year of the Chili Line abandonment. Baskett retired off the San Juan about five years later. Hines was on the last eastbound run of the San Juan in 1951.
