"Is this a diesel?" was asked more than once, Rich -
When she was on display with the American Freedom Train back in 1975-76. I can't think of a worse insult for a locomotive that many have referred to as 'The most beautiful train in the world' in her younger red, orange and black days pulling the S.P.'s premier varnish. Even in AFT red, white and Pepsi blue she was a stunning sight, although one grumpy old woman did insist that she wasn't a real steam engine 'cause she burned oil instead of coal.
Besides, I was just trying to help out Michael Allen – he was complaining about the lack of action on the NGDF today. It's been a beautiful afternoon here in SoCal, so probably most of the usual crowd is at the beach. I'm stuck here at home with a bad cold and apparently Willie got out of his cage earlier - otherwise it's been pretty quiet.

p.s. I'll admit that, aside from the locomotive, the front third of the AFT with the old baggage-dorm car and the concession wagons on the flats really did look a bit like a circus train – more so than the Coast Daylight, anyway
