I have one of the WSL videos (the one that has long interviews with Bert Bergstrom) and there's a long portion of snow fighting duties with the shays. Usually it was two of the larger shays and the wedge plow. The snow didn't seem to cause much concern for the drive lines (other than the blender effect of the crank throws flinging snow everywhere). My guess is that the snow helped keep everything cool off while pushing the plow.
