last D&RGW train on Lake City branch: May 25, 1933
Final ICC permission to cease operation of Pitken branch (D&RGW) and abandon it (C&S): FD #9134 199 ICC 623-631, Decided May 8, 1934 to take efffect in 30 days (June 7, 1934)
From the ICC report on the Pitken branch:
"The line is laid principally with 35 and 40 pound rail, about 50 years old, worn and bent and the banks are eroded."
"Prior to April 1, 1931, service was rendered by a tri-weekly mixed train, but since that date weekly service has been afforded."
"There are about 2,800 ties to the mile, of which it is estimated 2,000 should be replaced."
C-16's were used on both of the C&S Gunnison area branches operated by the D&RG(W) but a 1929 inspection judged the track as unsafe for their continued use. The line to Baldwin, where traffic was actually rising, got ties replaced and, after the 1937 transfer of ownership, heavier rail, but not the line to Pitken. (this 1929 report is cited in CRA #12, "The South Park Line: A Consise History", pg 149.
I can't find the reference to T-12's seeing the service out that I recall but 168, 169 & 172 were all in the Gunnison area in the early 1930's and, after the C-19's et al took over trains 315/316, Gunnison-Montrose, had no other use than on lines where the track was too badly worn, and traffic too light, to allow/justify a C-16.
As to 172, 1936 postings by Jimmy Blouch show it being moved DIT from Gunnison to Salida on 9/17/36, just before it was scrapped. (no subsequent moves shown, so my guess is it was scrapped at Salida)
