Engineers most likely to be seen at the throttle of narrow gauge trains out of Alamosa were not the senior hoggers. Pete Isaacson was the senior engineer out of Alamosa in 1967 with 47 years in the engine service. Then came Ben Greathouse, Bill Holt and Edgar Dunn. These guys had standard gauge runs so they didn't need to be concerned with the antique trains. Holt could have been the No. 3 man in Durango behind Bob Shock and Steve Connor but he was able to find more steady work in Alamosa.
That left Ken Faucette, Eldon Morgan, John Lira, Pete Degani, Carl Jack, Bob Morgan and Lee Otteson to run narrow gauge out of Alamosa. Jim Pearce was Road Foreman of Engines and Tom Eagan was on disability or they would have been in the group.
In Durango Andy Payne was No. 3 and Don Gibbs, No. 4. Payne was No. 21 overall. Several Alamosa men could have bumped Andy but that would have meant less work.
