We had Distant signals in advance of Home signals of the two-position lower quadrant Semaphore, these only showed a Vee-ended Yellow Blade by day and corresponding Yellow Light by night. Horizontal blade with Yellow light as Caution, Home signal will be at Stop or 45° downwards blade and Green light indicating Clear proceed Home signal is also at Clear. These Distant semaphores had all long been replaced by two-position Colour light signal heads by my cab time.
One exception in the North Island to that, the Cambridge Branch retained both the Distant and Home Semaphores that were fixed in the restrictive Horizontal position since it was the end of the line literally, these were there until the branch was torn out sometime in the mid-80's. Odd thing was I visited there 6-8 times a year and marveled at the antiquity but didn't photo it ha!
