Back in the early 1920's, water treatment was in its infancy. Boilers, fireboxes and tubes didn't last very long. I recall reading something about the Santa Fe's boiler practices in the 1920's where they were forced to wash boilers at least once a week - if not after every trip. Boiler tubes seldom lasted longer than 2 years, and fire boxes had to be renewed every 7-10 years.

It would be interesting see a report from the 1940's and compare the two.
