Sometime ago I asked what type of fuel (coal, oil or wood) required the most skill and effort to fire with. That was a fascinating discussion.

With all the information lately about rebuilding steam locomotives to be returned to operation, it made me wonder which fuel caused the most wear on the firebox.

Are there factors such as sulfur content, sap in the wood, etc. that would impact the lifespan of a firebox?

Does the manner in which the fireman does his job have an impact? Maintenance?

The water used even?
