Earl, I wonder if the reason the 490's didn't have the boards is that the C-41 class 2-8-0s they used to build them didn't have them and since Baldwin didn't make the boilers new for those engines they never thought to retrofit that which never was.

Santa Fe was another road that had lighted number boards, unique ATSF style, which, as far as I know, were used only for engine numbers and never for train numbers.
