The original Winans designed camelbacks on the B&O had a lever in the cab that could operate the smokebox door. Never sure of the reason, although I understand that an anthracite fire almost dances above the grates. Possibly the burning coal slack could be pulled into the tubes if the engine was working hard, thus the vents to keep the fire in place?
