A couple of things to consider:

The fire in the boiler of a locomotive going into the 'house is going to be very low. They're putting it to bed, and the fire might be banked, or being allowed to die down. Some places, actually dumped the fires outside before putting the engine into the house, then hooked the boiler up to house steam to keep pressure in the boiler without having a fire in the firebox.

Even if it had some fire in the box when it bulldozed its way to freedom, once all the dust settled, it would be a pretty simple matter to dump the fire into the ashpan and let it die out.
