An interesting sidebar on the stub run is that three Durango-based engineers who could have the train didn't take it. Owen G. House stayed on the Durango switch engine and John Dieckman and Jim Connor, who were the engineers when the train went to Durango, also passed. The Alamosa men could have bid on the train but none of them wanted it either.
As senior conductor on the Alamosa-Durango combined list, D.H. Hines could have had the train.
