I don't know about 40' reefers, but these boxcar roof walks look untreated - or at least unpainted - to me.
Assuming they were unpainted/untreated, how long would they last before needing to be replaced?
Did the
Rio Grande ever add sand to paint to increase traction on roof walks?

p.s. The above photo was taken about 1/2 mile west of Sublette. Making a Phraud-O-Graph™ of it
today would require a LOT of work - or a LOT of beavers - as the inside of the curve has been filled
in with Aspen trees during the intervening 48 years.
