I don't want to reignite the 478 for 483 debate; however, I have a comment to make on the subject and did not wish to further hijack the previous thread.

Even sitting in Chama, the 483 is a valuable asset. What if one of the active C&TS K36s should sustain major damage to the boiler, cylinder saddle, or frame? The cost of a replacement would likely be beyond what the state commissions could come up with - perhaps more than a major fundraising effort could obtain. These valuable components could be harvested from 483 if necessary.

I didn't come up with this on my own (I read it last year when the deal was still in play), but I don't remember who posted it, or where.

I have no dog in this fight. I was initially in favor of the 478 for 483 trade, but am rather ambivalent about it now due in large part to what I've posted above.

As for the 493 deal, I had/have my doubts about the logic of it, but if the two parties agree - great! Let's get another K37 online.
