Is any record of the bulletined mechanical jobs at Durango, and of whatever exempt jobs might have been there? Alamosa also. I'm particularly curious about the 50's and 60's, but any time frame would be interesting.
I was in engine service so the only experience I have with crossing craft lines was from that point. I remember early on I was told to stay on the engine and don't throw switches, even if the switchman had to walk a mile to do it. But in reality I threw a lot of switches and we all worked together, it was rarely an issue. Even as an officer I threw a lot of switches with the blessing of the crews. But in my experience the situation varied with the personality of the individuals involved. And clearly if somebody felt their job was threatened they probably became of bit more picky. Would be interesting to hear more personal stories from those who worked for the railroad back in those days.
