When I Googled to find the results (I was born on Feb 2 so am sort of interested just because of that) I saw that P. Phil was a German invention, except the Germans used a Badger. Not finding any Badgers in Pennsylvania, the German immigrants substituted a groundhog. So this would not be the first change of rodent.

Maybe a summer prairie dog to predict the fall colors?
