Colorado soil is very heavy in clay, a darkish gray to brown lumpy and hard. Digging a hole in Colorado can be very hard on shovels. The base of the Rocky Mountains is reddish Dakota sandstone, dark gray granite, and almost black shale. You will also find a lot of ores, gold, silver, lead, iron, and uranium/radium. Gravel is usually gray to very light browb/red depending on the iron content. These ores contain a lot of quartz and mica.
