Richard and Bob Farmer are restoring C&S caboose 1008 in Northridge (Los
Angeles) California to operational condition. They hoped to use the
original frame but after close examination determined it was unfit to
withstand operational loads. They are building a replacement and hoped to
save the original frame for display as an example of 19th century mortise
and tenon construction. The Denver South Park & Pacific Historical
Society agreed to transport the frame to Como and Dr. Charles
Brantigan, owner of the Como roundhouse, generously agreed to display the
frame in the roundhouse museum. On Thursday, Nov 12th the frame left Los
Angeles in the back of a U-Haul truck and arrived home in Como on Saturday November 14th in the morning. The frame was disassembled and reassembled in the roundhouse for future display. An interpretive sign will educate future visitors as to the significance of this historical artifact.
We would like to thank Bob Schoppe and the DSP&P Historical for all their help and dedication to preserving railroad history. We would also like to thank all the folks who showed up to help transport and reassemble the frame. Great work everyone!
