Okay, so I am checking on what body my daughter has D or FX. I think she upgraded somewhere along the line. So what you are saying is if she has a FX don't get her the DX 18-300, but maybe the 70-300 FX is a better choice. I do not think she has the FX but since she does some wedding work and head shots now and then she may have upgraded. In fact I remember she bought something more expensive 1-3 years ago. I think the 18-300 for the D40X would be fine for our use. She does a good job on train shots when I get her into someplace good!!!
Those images on the covers we did on the C&TS and D&S were mostly shot by her and I did the cropping and layouts, etc. I would post one but regular images are too big right now.
What I am thinking this lens could be used for is scenes which are distant. Imagine being on the highway below Windy Point, and wanting to get a close-up of the train with the Coxo phone booth, or shooting a westbound crossing Lobato Trestle, or anything in remote areas where things are far off in the distance, where you want to tighten-it-up instead of the wide shot. The more I read this thread the more convinced I am that the girls would be better off with the 18-300 and just the one lens. Keep the 18-55 for those times when the big one is a burden, or as a back-up.

Here is an oldie from 1985 taken with the old Pentax 6x7 and a marginal scan. Guess its kinda rare now that 476 no longer runs. At least we have some NG content in this thread now, eh!!!
