Another Uintah question:

Looking at photos of #40, it appears there is no pipe connecting the piston valve to the smokebox. Does this mean the locomotive was built as a slide valve and later converted? The other conversions I have seen have this pipe (i.e. the Guatemala 2-8-0s). I did see a very old photo of this loco when it had a slope tender and a 2nd sandbox in front of the cab. Unfortunately, you can't see the wheels or valves in the photo.
