Handlan-Buck Radial Lens Classification Lamps (official name) have a green lens on one side and a clear lens on the other side. An internal shade turns inside the lamp between the light source (either a light bulb or kerosene burner) to blank off the undesired lens.

Also the entire lamp can spin in it's bracket.

So, to change from white (clear) to green, one spins the lamp around 180 degrees and turns the shade to blank off the clear lens and open up the green one.

I have a Dressel Radial Lens lamp that has a different way of showing green and white - probably to avoid patent issues. On this lamp, the barrel of the lamp has one opening for the light to shine through. The lenses mount to a separate collar which is spun around to show the desired color through the opening.

Handlan Buck on the right, Dressel on the left, hanging on T&P 316 on what turned out to be her last day in service in 2013.
