Class 40 was in essence a standard Baldwin 8-18-D as used by narrow gauge railroads across the United States. The example below was operated at the 1876 centennial exposition before being sold to the D&RG. While this locomotive had a rounded cab roof, photographs also show members of the class with peaked cab roofs.
