Never seen a bear anywhere near Lava, but I've seen plenty of rattlers over the years. Generally in the first days of the season, not so much in the fall. I think there's a den they winter in somewhere around there. My theory is that the spring weather is still cool around opening day and they haven't spread out much yet.

Just be careful climbing in and around the rocks - don't be shoving any hands or feet into spaces between rocks - and you'll be fine.
