Hi,

Fascinating reading. I've not heard of Railway Engineering confused smiley I guess I'll need to look into that.

Chris, the NZR Garratts reminds me of one of the Pennsylvania Railroad's first experimental electrics - the FF1 (1918). 1-C+C-1 (2-6-6-2 in steam) was more powerful than the wood cars of the era could take.

Intended as the prime equipment for crossing the Allegheny Mountains, It ended up as a pusher out of the freight yards out of Baltimore. IIRC, 4000 HP. I think the diesel electric occurred before the PRR could electrify to Pittsburg and showed a less expensive way to the future of electric traction.

Steel underframe rolling stock would have eliminated the problems. I suspect the same for the NZR Garratts.
