We are still chipping away to complete the restoration of LTRy&TCo box car #4. We just recently built and applied a new side door for this 1903 J.S. Hammond built car so it will appear as built. This car and three of its sister cars were originally built on the same work order for the Tonopah Railroad in 1903 but were transferred to the LTRy&TCo in 1905 after the standard gauging of the Tonopah RR.
Amazingly all four cars still survive in one form or another. Our number 4 was being used as a storage container on a ranch in the Alabama Hills South of Lone Pine and had been on the ground on blocks for 52 years. Cars 5 & 7 are at the Laws Railroad museum in Bishop, California. The 5 was de-trucked and on blocks and the 7 is complete and in the display train behind SPNG engine #9. I recently visited the #6 car which is in a back yard in Lone Pine being used as a storage unit and appears to be in good condition.
We are currently looking for box car #3 which was later SPNG 129 and one of three of the first box cars built for the Lake Tahoe Railway. Box car #1 has been rescued by the Babcock family is undergoing restoration as Lake Tahoe #1. Box car #2 appears to have been destroyed by looking at the available records. John Christensen
