Wow, you did mean "large" piles. Those look to be on the order of 4' tall.

(For some reason I was expecting something more like the cinder clean-out piles from the Ridgway spark arrestors on the C&S.)

The piles also appear in the photo at the bottom of page 117, with a gon (full of ash?) in the far right of the picture.

(And while we're at it, the photo on the bottom of page 118 shows yet another stub switch at Sargent still in use in the 1950's.)
