I recently bought a book of all the watercolors of the great american realist Edward Hopper and boy did i get a surprise. Hopper is perhaps best known for his city scenes in the 1920s to 40s, in particular an all night cafe scene called "Nighthawks" which i am sure most you have seen.
Anyway Hopper and his wife Jo were honeymooning in Santa Fe in 1925. One afternoon after walking the streets of old Santa Fe they went back to their hotel and Jo took a nap. When she awoke he was gone, so she went looking for him, and found him down at the railroad yards painting a locomotive in watercolor. The painting was called "locomotive D&RG"as below. Note the number on the cab as D&RGW practice, green boiler jacket and dulux gold lettering!!??
