How to push a train?

I understand the concept of having a helper engine at the tail end (or in the middle) of a train. But how does one make it work? If ya don't push hard enough you are not doing any good, but if ya push too hard you will derail or break a car in the middle of train. Obviously it works, but I would enjoy insight in how the logistics work.
