You have to remember that most of the sugar cane lines were gone by the mid-1950's, long before Hawaii was a major tourist destination. Scott told me that almost all of the equipment (sans locomotives) from a 2 foot operation on the southern part of Kauai was stored at the abandoned mill until about 15 years ago when it was scrapped by accident before he could rescue it for the museum.
The original idea for Grove Farm's railway was to run from the town of Lihue to the Wharf. Then cruise ship passengers could take the train up to the town to go shopping. This line would include a prominent 800 foot long trestle that would be visible from the wharf. Local civic leaders were all in favor until the $2 million price tag to build the line and trestle was mentioned. At that point much of the support dried up and now the hope is to build down the valley at least to the trestle site. Scott has over 4000' of rail on hand if he can get funding and help to continue the line..
