While on vacation last week in Kauai I took a tour of Grove Farm museum.
In front of the museum was this piece of original 30' track:
After the tour of the museum I inquired as to the status of their railroad. I was given directions to the train's location and told that someone might be there working on the equipment. At the railroad's location I found Scott Johnson who is in charge of the rail line. He was most cordial and took over an hour out of his busy schedule to move equipment for me to photograph. The first photo is of their ex-Cargill Salt diesel locomotive with a heavy equipment moving car and four of the former sugar cane cars parked on their mainline to make up a train:
The sugar cane cars have seats mounted in the center and the sides drop down to allow passengers to board the train. The train runs every 2nd Thursday of the month.
Next Scott pulled out "Paulo" which is the oldest surviving plantation locomotive in Hawaii. It was built in Germany in 1887 by Hohenzollern and shipped around the "Horn" for Koloa Sugar Plantation where it operated until 1920. This 2-4-0 weighs 10 tons and is still operational. when I was there Scott was busy getting it ready for a special New Year's run on Jan. 2 (sadly we left on Jan. 1).
