The economics of valve gear

I know there have been discussions in the past about valve gear and alas, I have not been able to find them.

My curiousity has made me wonder why the switch from what seems to be an easier to maintain, and thus less expensive in maintenance costs, valve gear as found on the C-16s to the more expensive Walscharets (sp?) on the K-class locomotives.

Was the effeciency in operation, and thereby lower operating costs, worth the expense of what would appear to be a more difficult, and thereby more expensive to maintain valve gear?
