Re: Cuba-US relations thawing - NG impact?

Most of the remaining narrow gauge steam engines, all in very poor condition, have been moved to a few select locations for preservation:

- the Cuban RR Museum at Havana-Cristina

- Central José Smith Cardenas in Matanzas (now a museum mill)

- Central Marcelo Salado in Caibarien (now a museum mill)

- Central Patria o Muerte in Moron (now a museum mill)

Most of the engines which had been brought to the restoration site next to the Havana Capitolio have been restored either for display at the Cristina museum, for display in a park or at a display site on the Havana docks. The restoration program has now officially been ended. There are some more locos on display at various locations, including former mills, as well as at the Cienfuegos Loco Park (4 engines). All of these engines have lost most of their fittings, brass parts, etc...

At five locations n.g. pleasure railroads are operated either for foreign tourists or for Cubans:

- Parque Lenin in Havana (36in.): a 10 km loop at this large park south of the capital is operated on weekends and holidays, two Baldwin 2-8-0 remain operational (1350 BLW 43394 of 1916, 1431 BLW 58778 of 1925), plus some others either dumped or on display. However, the trains are often canceled when the engines break down. The Pioneers Youth Organization have their own train with 0-4-0DE 2103 (GE 25-ton 32402 of 1955), which they operate during the week;

- Parque de las Diversiones in Cienfuegos (36in.): steam-to-diesel converted HKP 0-4-2T 677 of 1884 operates on a small loop at a children's amusement park;

- Parque de las Diversiones "Camilo Cienfuegos" in Camagüey (30in.): one Kambarka TU-7E on a small loop at a children's amusement park;

- ex-Central Rafael Freyre at Santa Lucia near Holguin (30in.) operates a train with 0-6-0 1 LA MAMBISITA (BLW 6456 of 1882) on a short stretch of line (the least scenic of the network) for tourists from nearby resorts. A passenger service for locals is also operated into the hills, using two or three railcars, including No. 50 which is thought to be a 1938 Brill;

- Havana "La Edad de Oro" Zoo (the old zoo) in Havana-Miramar (16in.): the train is hauled by a Miniature Train Co. bogie diesel with a German-built replacement engine, which is turned on turntables at each end of the line.

Three or four sugar centrals still used diesel-operated n.g. railroads until at least 2012, mostly for terminal operations at the mill or short lines to loading points just outside the mills:

- Central Catorce de Julio (CAI 416, 30in.): five Kambarka TU-7E diesels;

- Central Heriberto Duquesne in Caibarien (CAI 401, 36in.): four Brush S1/B diesels;

- Central Roberto Ramirez Delgado in Manzanillo (CAI 624, 36in.): two Kambarka TU-7E diesels;

- Central Manuel Tames in Yateras (CAI 630, 36in.): might still operate a single TU-7E (probably not).

Finally, a railcar service is still operated at former Central Frank Pais in Cayo Mambi (36in.). A new railcar was supplied earlier this year and links the town with some shrimp farms on the coast.
