This is a D&RGW short reefer hatch. No Hinges on the plug. So when the hatches were braced open to allow draft, these had to be removed for air flow. Were these stored inside the car?
Also on your long reefer, if the hatches were braced open, was there a way to hold the plugs open as well? it seems the hatch doors would not really serve a purpose unless the plugs were either removed, or braced open to allow the air flow
