We sort of repeated the 1970 push to save the C&TS again during the past year. I hope we do not need to do it again.
Obviously September 1970 was the crowning day 483 made C&TS history.
I am sorry that we did not have the opportunity to celibrate 30 years with a big shindig, but keeping the line going is more important.
However acording to Colorado Rail Annual 21, 1950 also had alot of momentous events:
1) Approval for the abandonment of the San Juan occured (it was finally discontinued in 1951).
2) RGS lost the mail contract causing its demise in 1951.
3) The "Ticket to Tomahawk" train was first used (June 18) on the Silverton branch for tourists.
4) Caboose 0500 was moved to the Narrow Gauge Motel. This started the Colorado RR Museum Collection.
5) D&RGW 346 was saved.
6) The abandonment of the narrow gauge portion of the "Valley Line" was approved. This also evantually killed the Gunnison lines since Crested Butte coal could no longer be shipped by rail to the south.
It does cause one to stop and think.
Doug.
