The Reading burned Anthracite, hence their extremely wide "Wooten" fireboxes. That was the reason some of the eastern roads, like the CNJ, used camelbacks. The firebox was so wide there was no way to set a cab on it, so it was moved forward of the firebox and the poor fireman had to stand out in the open to fire. On engines like the Reading T-1 4-8-4, the trailing truck allowed the cab to be mounted behind the firebox.
