Hi,

Usually the trestle would take a decade or so to rot out.

A fill would settle in 8-10 moths (typical number only). During the next 9 years, ballast would be tamped down so the fill would be able to take the load of the track as the trestle rotted out without the track settling.

Learned it in Civil Engineering.
