I think there must be some advantages to building and maintaining a wooden car in a dry climate like Las Vegas. A woman I know who plays the cello was telling me that the climate here on the East Coast, with warm humid summers alternating with cold dry winters, is famously hard on musical instruments, to a much greater degree than in Europe (the environment they were built for). They work themselves apart after a few years and need to be taken in for repairs periodically as a result. I can imagine something similar happening to wooden railroad cars, even if the joinery isn't quite as precise as a cello or violin.
