This may sound like an off the wall question, but I have as of late wondered if any of the large locomotive companies ever fiddle with the thought of having tapered flues going from the Firebox end and taper down to a smaller diameter to the smokebox end,
that is Tapered on the inside of the Flue not on the outside, as that would create a very hard way to get the flues out of the Firebox end if it was tappered on the outside.
I have worked with air conditioning a bit, and the central air line coming out of the furnace air conditioner is usually larger but as it is dispersed to the other rooms the insulated pipe gets smaller the farther out you go to the other rooms. I was thinking that that would work well too in a boiler to taper the interior of the pipe to reduce the lost of heat going up the smoke stack and keep the transfer of heat in the flue.
Okay I am going to put my hard hat on now.
Still a Student,
Dave
