Firing a Rotary Snowplow

July 31, 2014 11:45PM
Another steam operations question - A friend recently showed me a picture of the rotary on the White Pass and Yukon. I was looking at some video of the rotary in action, and noticed the large volumes of black smoke, while the locomotives have a relatively clean stack. Is this for effect, or do the rotaries need to be fired heavy to keep up steam? I'd be curious to hear about firing the coal-burning rotaries as well.
