Jerry Day provided me with this info on the K-36 flangers:
DENVER & RIO GRANDE WESTERN RAILROAD
AUTHORITY FOR EXPENDITURE
No. T-8021
State: Unallocated
Date: 12-21-39
Description: Equip five K-36 class Narrow Gauge Engines with Priest Flangers
Purpose and Necessity:
To eliminate necessity of running flanger after track has been previously cleared by snow plows, due to snow drifting back on tracks. Also, in many cases of ordinary storms, trains are stalled due to the traction of locomotives being reduced on account of bad flange, whereas, locomotives equipped with flangers would be more efficient and in many cases would eliminate delays to trains and the necessity of using helpers.
