The changes were made in accordance with the Southern's modifications to sister engines. 4501 is just about 70 years late in getting her rebuild. (the new cylinders that Southern installed in the '40s had un-machined pads for the exhaust for the feedwater heater, indicating Southern may have intended to install a feedwater heater, but for whatever reason they didn't)
On the positive side, the feedwater heater is easier on the boiler than the injector (heated water versus cold) and they don't need to carry a second fireman like they did under the old SOU/NS steam program.
