It is interesting that the 4501 is being "modernized" with the feed water heater and stoker. Probably excellent changes, but I'm curious is these changes raised any debate about maintaining the historic "character" of the engine. Don't get me wrong, I am not criticizing the changes, just curious if there was any discussion about the pros and cons of change. I vaguely recall hearing that similar improvements were made to some of 4501's sisters by the SOU. Similar changes to other preserved engines (C&TS?) might not be well received, but where steam engines are in service and have work to do, changes like that might from time to time make a lot of sense.
