Between 1915 and 1920, the Sumpter Valley Railway needed to upgrade its locomotive fleet, mostly 2-6-0 Moguls and 2-8-0 Consolidations. To do this, it purchased a total of five new 2-8-2 Mikados and one new 4-6-0 ten wheeler. The 4-6-0 appears to have been used mostly for passenger train duty. It was the only 4-6-0 the railroad owned. My question is what made 4-6-0 preferable for passenger train service rather than buying another 2-8-2 ? Brian.
